Principal Lawyer
Kamil Lakshman
BA, Dip CM, MBA, LLB
Kamil Lakshman completed a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Education from Victoria University, Wellington. After that, she worked for many years as a divisional manager in the Ministry of Education. At this stage, she commenced and completed her Diploma in Corporate Management and Master of Business Administration in International Management.
Following this, she completed a Bachelor of Law from Victoria University. During her time at law school, she worked with migrant women through a voluntary organisation. Many migrants sought help from this organisation with their Immigration issues, and Kamil started to learn about the various immigration issues migrants face in New Zealand.
Kamil decided to set up “Mamta,” an Asian Women’s Support Group that focused solely on providing support to women from ethnic communities in Wellington. It was then that Kamil discovered that immigration law is her passion.
Kamil was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the New Zealand High Court in 2000. Kamil started practising law in various areas, such as conveyancing and employment, with some immigration cases. Her first Immigration case was that of a refugee. Kamil fought for this person until they achieved residence. This was complicated by the claim that this person lied.
In 2003, Kamil decided to establish Idesi Legal – a boutique practice that specialises in immigration law.
Given her passion for humanitarian areas of law, Kamil also started exploring another fulfilling area of humanitarian law: refugee. An area of law that she finds extremely fulfilling when she can assist people who have to escape persecution from their homelands in New Zealand.
Kamil is also an approved legal aid practitioner in refugee law. She is able to represent asylum seekers who lack the financial means to pay legal practitioners for their asylum claims in New Zealand.
Since 2001, Kamil has assisted countless migrants in reuniting with their families in New Zealand and/or establishing New Zealand as their new home. She has won numerous humanitarian appeals before the Immigration and Protection Tribunal, successfully obtaining New Zealand residence for her clients after their visa applications (both residence and temporary) were declined.
Kamil has become a highly experienced practitioner in all types of visas and immigration matters. She is also passionate about humanitarian areas of immigration law, particularly when her clients are completely at the end of the road. She has consistently found a way through in very troubled and those in desperate need cases. Helping people who have exhausted all their avenues to remain in New Zealand. Through a thorough investigation of the client’s past, she oftentimes finds a solution for her clients.
Kamil is known for her strong advocacy skills. Her niche skills in finding solutions in complex and seemingly impossible cases have differentiated Idesi Legal. Idesi Legal has become one of the handful of law firms that can successfully represent clients with complex immigration histories. Kamil’s methodology has resulted in her successfully legalising many clients who have been unlawfully in New Zealand for 15 to 30 years.
She has previously served on the New Zealand Law Society on Immigration New Zealand’s reference group, which consults on broader Immigration issues with interested parties, including the Minister for Immigration. She has also served on the New Zealand Law Society Immigration and Refugee Law Reform Committee for ten years and on the Wellington Branch of the NZLS Immigration and Refugee Committee for a very long time. Kamil is currently the Convenor again after a five-year break.
After more than 20 years of practising immigration law, Kamil knows that immigration law may seem very simple at first – but it is, in fact, surprisingly difficult and complex.
Kamil and her legal team look forward to being part of your journey to reunite with your loved ones, establish your new home in New Zealand, or solve your immigration issue, whatever it may be.
